Any dog that is not being used for breeding purposes should be spayed to prevent possible medical problems. Breeding dogs should be spayed after retirement. Owners should note that spaying has a small risk of adversely effecting certain behavioral problems; this risk should be discussed with the examining veterinarian or an animal behavioral specialist.
