Heaves, Equine - contd.
A horse cannot be prevented from developing allergies per se, but prevention of the clinical signs of affected horses is a reasonable goal. Horses with COPD symptoms should be kept in a dust-free environment such as an outdoor stable. The use of shredded paper for bedding, dampened hay for feed, and pellets instead of hay for horses that are intolerant to hay, may reduce symptoms. Owners should work with the examining veterinarian to determine the environment that causes the horse to have trouble breathing, so that this environment can be avoided or modified. The examining veterinarian may also prescribe any medications that are necessary to control clinical signs.
