Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Vaccine (RHDv)
Rabbit owners, we have great news! RHDv (Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Vaccine) is now available at our clinic. The vaccine is manufactured in the US by Medgene Labs. The initial series is 2 vaccines given 3-4 weeks apart, then an annual vaccine after that. Rabbits as young as 4 weeks can start the series.
This vaccine is on emergency release use to stop the spread of this virus in both domestic and wild rabbits. Possible side effects you may see include a lump at the injection side, and some lethargy. RHD is a highly contagious viral hepatitis that has a mortality rate of 75-100%. There is no known cure, only supportive therapy for a sick rabbit. Symptoms of this disease can range from fever, inappetence, lethargy, muscle spasms, breathing issues, bluing of mouth, gums, and lips, bleeding from nose/mouth, and sudden death.
If you have any questions, or would like to schedule an appointment for RHD vaccine, please contact our clinic directly. Please keep in mind that in order for us to administer this vaccine, your rabbit must be up to date on their wellness exam and be in good health.
