Bird and Exotic Pet Surgery in Laurel

Your bird or exotic pet is your companion, someone you love and take care of. We know the special role she plays in your life, and how difficult it can be if you’re told she needs surgery. Lakeside Veterinary Center is one of the only animal hospitals with veterinarians who are familiar with bird and exotic pet surgery. In fact, many of our clients are referred to us by other veterinarians. Dr. Rhody has surgical expertise with birds, reptiles, amphibians, ferrets, rabbits, sugar gliders, and many other exotic pets. Give us a call at (301) 498-8387 to learn more today.

Laser Surgery

Surgery for your pet is now safer than ever. That’s because we rely on laser beams for many of our surgical procedures. We can perform routine and non-routine bird and exotic pet surgeries using this technology, which is much less invasive than traditional tools. In fact, pet laser surgery has increased options for treatment and even enabled surgical procedures that were not previously possible for many species.

What makes laser surgery so safe is that a beam of light energy (as opposed to a scalpel) “cuts” the skin tissues, reducing the risk of infection and blood loss. In essence, the laser vaporizes the skin cells and separates the tissue while sterilizing it at the same time. The use of a surgical laser minimizes pain, swelling, risk of infection, and scarring. It seals the capillaries, small blood vessels, and nerve endings, allowing for more post-operative comfort.

Spaying & Neutering

Spaying/neutering is one of the most common procedures we perform at our hospital. These procedures can provide numerous health benefits for your pet and can essentially increase his/her lifespan. Spaying can reduce the risk of developing mammary tumors, pyometra, and certain behavioral problems. Neutering can reduce testicular cancer and certain behavioral problems. The procedure for spaying and neutering and the age at which exotic pets have this surgery vary from species to species. Please feel free to call us for advice.

We spay and neuter the following exotic species:
  • Guinea pigs
  • Rabbits
  • Rats
  • Sugar gliders (neuter only)
  • Female iguanas and lizards are often spayed when there is a medical problem with the reproductive tract
