Spay and Neuter

At Lakeside Veterinary Center in Laurel, MD, we take your pet’s care very seriously. Whenever you bring your pet in for surgery with us, we closely monitor them to ensure their comfort and safety. We’ll carefully discuss the benefits of pet spay and neuter surgery, along with when you should get your specific breed and type of pet spayed or neutered. Afterwards, you’ll be sure to receive detailed instruction and medication from our in-house pharmacy.

The Benefits of Spay and Neuter

Many pets receive extensive benefits from spay and neuter surgery. Certain cancers are reduced or eliminated in cats, dogs and rabbits, birds and reptiles. In dogs, the benefits of pet spay and neuter surgery should be weighed against any drawbacks. Certain breeds should wait for spay and neuter surgery until after they reach reproductive maturity to reduce the likelihood of other cancers. The behavioral benefits of pet spay and neuter surgery are incomparable. You’ll reduce the chances your pet gets injured or lost due to roaming behavior and the amount of worrisome urine spraying and marking. Animal overpopulation and homelessness is an epidemic in the United States and by practicing responsible pet ownership, you help combat the issue.

Keeping Your Pet Happy Afterwards

We want to keep your pet as comfortable as possible after surgery and we take preemptive pain relief measures at our animal hospital. As your pet awakens from anesthesia, we’ll keep them warm and soothed until they’re in your loving arms. As your pet’s caretaker, we ask that you keep some things in mind, including:

  • Give your pet a quiet place to recover afterwards free from other pets.
  • Try to relax your pet and keep them from running and jumping for two weeks.
  • Refrain from giving them a bath for at least 10 days.
  • Check their incision site daily and watch out for any unusual redness, swelling or discharge.
